Chamonix Winter Activities

With 90% of the ski areas located above 2000m, Chamonix is a guaranteed-snow resort!

There are five main ski areas with plenty to offer skiers and boarders of all abilities.

In addition to skiing and snowboarding there are many other exciting activities for the all ages. It's really up to you how you spend your time, but one thing is for sure it won't be dull!

Skiing
The biggest problem for skiers in Chamonix is deciding where to ski! The area available to ski is massive and varied. There is plenty of choice for every level of skier from the total beginner to off piste enthusiasts.

Your hosts will be happy to share as much knowledge of the areas as possible so that you can get the most out of our time on the snow and find the most appropriate area for your ability.

Ski hire is available in numerous places in and around Chamonix, which RushAdventures can organise for you if required.

Snowboarding
Snowboarding is growing in popularity across Europe and can be enjoyed at all levels in Chamonix.

Aiguille du Midi or Grands Montets have the altitiude to always find snow and can provide some serious off piste riding. If you're into tricks, check out some of the natural kickers at Le Brevent and La Flégère. There's a halfpipe built at the Grands Montets and a natural one at Le Tour.

For beginners, the pistes of Le Tour and Les Houches offer plenty of space and width for turning.

Chamonix hosts a number of events each winter. The biggest event is the ChamJam held in March. This is a five day freeride festival with boarder X, halfpipe, big air, music and partying.

There are numerous places to hire gear, all of which can be organised by your hosts if required.

Telemark
Telemark skiing is a traditional skiing tecnique originating from Norway in 1868. It allows the heals to move freely from the ski and is a graceful method to explore the mountains.

Chamonix Valley has become one of the main centres for telemarking in the world and offers opportunities for all standards to enjoy. Instruction and guides are widely available and can be recommended and organised by your hosts.

Cross Country Skiing
There are numerous cross country ski pistes ranging from just 0.5km to over 12kms in the valley. And both forms of cross country are catered for (traditional/skating).

Cross country skiing can be a great way to explore the mountain on a leisurely tour, or at the other extreme – can be a gruelling work out that any athlete would be proud of! The versatility of the sport makes it suitable for children and therefore popular with families as a winter sport.

As with all the skiing disciplines, rental equipment is available throughout the valley and RushAdventures can organise all of this for you.

Vallee Blanche
Hire a guide and take your camera! The 17km route decends through 2800m offering stunning mountain views and the experience of a lifetime.

It is available for skiers and snowboarders of intermediate ability and above but the risks of avalanches and dangers of crevasses makes a guide an essential part of the day!

Let RushAdventures hire a reliable and English speaking guide to take you on this stunning and memorable day.

Snowshoeing
This can be an excellent way for non-skiers to experience winter conditions up in the mountains (it is also the way in which snowboarders reach those off piste areas). Snowshoes are basically frames to be strapped onto sturdy walking boots to increase the surface area covered by each foot. However many of the full day treks can be hard work and more physically demanding then skiing. For a less demanding outing, the Full Moon Trek offered by many of the guides provides a more informal and intoxicated stumble home!

It is also possible to hire raquettes (snowshoes) and ski poles from the local shops and use a guide book to find a walk appropriate to your level and fitness.

Dog Sledging
This is becoming more and more popular. The dogs, who are bred to work, are Huskies – domestic dog/wolf crosses. They are wonderfully affectionate animals and are becoming very popular as pets. It is an exciting experience, not for the speed as it’s little more than walking pace, but to be with these animals and in their environment.

Even though there are five companies in Chamonix, it is still essential to book in advance.
